Fred Johnston

Repudiation

To have these walls to live within
And cultivate their silence and restraint
Repudiate the letter and the book review
Misdirected anger and unfair complaint —

Make tea at four and read until Angelus
With one hand warmed by the sunlight on a chair
Make a quick trip out for the evening paper
Spread it on the carpet and leave it there

To make no sound detectable without
Never seen at a window or heard to sing
Barely to hear the rumours going round
About some local crime or other sordid thing

To render oneself harmless and invisible
By acto of will or discipline
So that when the knock comes and the question
One can say in truthfulness there’s no one in.

Spiders

When these shelves were put up
when this wallpaper lay on the bed in rolls
we came here newly born each day to set it right
put our mark on each room and cast benevolent spells
in the hallway, hang a lamp over the door
one asked no more of the other
than to be the voice that answered in the dark

last night I startled spiders
with my tidying up, a modest family
bundled in a corner, so great their haste
to get away that the web vibrated, sang of them
for a time — I hear you telling me just where to drill
and what length the wood must be, how to measure up
a roll of paper so that I don’t have to fight with it

no spells of forgetting keep you out
no amount of talking to myself brigs you nearer
I brush away the web and feel I’ve achieved something.
