Arthur Spear

Enroque

Castling

O if only she’d come when hours were abundant!
If only she’d come when water would spring in the fountains
and nights were like gloves!

But she arrived when things were already falling
and days were not so merry anymore.
She entered palaces with worn tapestries,
rationed candlesticks.

Meanwhile, she saw one or two scoundrels plotting.
And the ruler’s ineptitude.

She stayed, nevertheless.
She would walk along a street, or visit a square,
she would see the lights in some old tower appear and fade,
and she would find pleasure in it.

But it was the remnants, true, which fell to her lot,
the mentions of a shine.
So she made a fair silence.
A delicate castling.
And returned to her closed mirrors at home.
