Carl Sandburg

Bajo la luna de la cosecha,
cuando la suave plata
gotea relumbrando
en las noches de jardín,
Muerte, la sombría burladora,
viene y te susurra
como una amiga hermosa
que recuerda.

Bajo las rosas del verano
cuando el vivo carmesí
se oculta al ocaso en la penumbra
de las hojas coloradas,
Amor, de manos pequeñas,
viene y te toca
con un millar de recuerdos
y te hace
preguntas hermosas, incontestables.

Under the Harvest Moon

Under the harvest moon,
When the soft silver
Drips shimmering
Over the garden nights,
Death, the gray mocker,
Comes and whispers to you
As a beautiful friend
Who remembers.

Under the summer roses
When the flagrant crimson
Lurks in the dusk
Of the wild red leaves,
Love, with little hands,
Comes and touches you
With a thousand memories,
And asks you
Beautiful, unanswerable questions.

¿Cuánto me amas, un millón de cestas?
Oh, mucho, mucho más que eso.

¿Y mañana quizás tan sólo media cesta?
Mañana quizás ni siquiera media cesta.

¿Y es esa la aritmética de tu corazón?
Esa es la manera en que el viento mide el tiempo.

How Much?

How much do you love me, a million bushels?
Oh, a lot more than that, Oh, a lot more.

And tomorrow maybe only half a bushel?
Tomorrow maybe not even a half a bushel.

And is this your heart arithmetic?
This is the way the wind measures the weather.
