Dame más Amor o más Desdén;
la Zona Tórrida o la Helada
traen igual alivio a mi dolor;
ninguno me ofrece la Templada;

Por tanto, corona mi dicha o cura mi dolor;
dame más Amor o más Desdén.

Thomas Carew, Inglaterra, 1595-1640.

Mediocritie in Love Rejected

Give me more Love or more Disdaine;
The Torrid, or the Frozen Zone,
Bring equall ease unto my paine;
The Temperate affords me none;
Either extreme, of Love, or Hate,
Is sweeter than a calme estate.

Give me a storme; if it be Love,
Like Danae in that golden showre
I swimme in pleasure; if it prove
Disdaine, that Torrent will devoure
My Vulture-hopes; and he’s posest
Of Heaven, that’s but from Hell releast:

Then crowne my joyes, or cure my paine;
Give me more Love, or more Disdaine.

Thomas Carew / Belleza ingrata amenazada

Sabe, Celia, ya que eres tan orgullosa,
que fui yo quien te ha dado tu renombre;
si mis versos no te hubieran exaltado

yo se lo dí a tu voz y a tus ojos;
son míos tus encantos y tus gracias;
tú eres mi estrella y brillas en mis cielos;

no sea que deshaga lo que he hecho;
que los necios adoren tus formas imaginarias,
yo te conozco en tu hechura mortal;

Ingrateful Beauty Threatened

Know Celia, since thou art so proud,
‘Twas I that gave thee thy renown;
Thou hadst, in the forgotten crowd
Of common beauties, liv’d unknown,
Had not my verse exhal’d thy name,
And with it imp’d the wings of fame.

That killing power is none of thine,
I gave it to thy voice, and eyes;
Thy sweets, thy graces, all are mine;
Thou art my star, shin’st in my skies;
Then dart not from thy borrow’d sphere
Lightning on him that fix’d thee there.

Tempt me with such affrights no more,
Lest what I made, I uncreate;
Let fools thy mystic forms adore,
I’ll know thee in thy mortal state;
Wise poets that wrapp’d Truth in tales,
Knew her themselves, through all her veils.

John Suckling / El amante fiel

¡Vaya! He amado
tres días enteros seguidos;

no merezco elogio alguno:
el Amor no habría hecho un alto en mí
si fuera otra y no ella.

Si fuera otra y no ella,
y ese rostro exactamente,
en su lugar habría
cuando menos diez docenas.

John Suckling, Inglaterra, 1609-1642

The Constant Lover

Out upon it! I have loved
Three whole days together;
And am like to love three more,
If it prove fair weather.

Time shall molt away his wings
Ere he shall discover
In the whole wide world again
Such a constant lover.

But the spite on't is, no praise
Is due at all to me:
Love with me had made no stay,
Had it any been but she.

Had it any been but she,
And that very, very face,
There had been at least ere this
A dozen dozen in her place.

D. H. Lawrence / ¡No, Mr. Lawrence!

¡No, Mr. Lawrence, no es así!
Yo sé algo del amor,
no me molesta decirle.
Más que usted, a lo mejor.

Y lo que sé es que usted
exagera su encanto, su beldad.
No es así. Usted lo falsea, ¿sabía?
Es bastante aburrido, en realidad.

David Herbert Lawrence, Gran Bretaña, 1885-1930
Versión © Gerardo Gambolini

No! Mr Lawrence!

No, Mr Lawrence, it’s not like that!
I don’t mind telling you
I know a thing or two about love,
perhaps more than you do.

And what I know is that you make it
too nice, too beautiful.
It’s not like that, you know; you fake it.
It’s really rather dull.
